This is a neon discharge tube, with a series of cathodes, one for each numeral, and a plate anode with punched out numerals. The gas discharge goes from the selected cathode to the corresponding numeral, illuminating it. The relevant cathode is selected by an electronic counting and logic circuit. A number of these counting tubes were used in a laboratory counter to display the decimal count of some event eg radiation detection counts, or frequency of an electronic source.
