This sounder was typically used in post offices between the middle of the 19th and 20th centuries to receive Morse Code messages, usually telegrams. The message would operate the sounder to produce a clacking sound representing the dots and dashes sent. These clackings were transcribed by a human operator typing on to a suitable form or paper tape. Automatic translators could do this transcription without operator intervention.
